It is for the first time ace director Ranjith joining hand with Dulquer Salman for a movie. In a recent interview Dulquer said character in Njaan is the most challenging one for him.
Njaan directed by Ranjith after Kadal Kadannoru Mathukkutty.
Njaan is based on T P Rajeevan's literary work titled KTN Kottoor: Ezhutthum Jeevithavum. NJAN is not a typical commercial film nor a conventional art film. Told in a narrative manner, the film is not everyone’s cup of tea. The film will satisfy class audience other than entertainment fans. After a big rally of entertainment fun packed movies, theatres going back to its classy mood. Njaan released over 63+ theatres inside Kerala.
Even though Onam celebration movies are not cleared the theatres yet, it will be a great challenge to Njann, to be here in box office.
The movie Njann is much different than other Renjith movies, especially its story telling way of self narration manner.
Movie begins from post independent and modern India where Ravi Chandra Sekharan, an IT professional and an active blogger takes us to the life of KTN Kottoor, a poet, a writer and a man who stood for the cause of farmers and the poor in the pre independent India's struggle for freedom. Kottoor as shown in the movie is a looser who could not reach or achieve his dreams.
The film tried its best to be a classy one but with a slow pace in movement and showing the past mixed with the present, a sort of confusion is created that hamper the movie watching experience. So the portion where the story of Kottoor is shown gets a confusing feel that lacks clarity. Also it was too lengthy but again since the product is based on a novel, that makes the director in a tough position as he cannot remove and chop scenes that will do injustice to the book.
Performance Analysis
Dulquer had a different and well written character with him and he has done justice to both the roles he portrayed. A long list of supporting actors are there in the film and everyone has contributed with their own share. Suresh Krishna, Haresh Peradi, Joy Mathew, Sadhique, Saiju Kurup, Irshad and Renji Panicker were the standout performers. There are no female leads as such with Muthumani, Sajitha Madathil, Anumol and Jyothi Lakshmi making up the female actors and each of them have importance and prominence in the overall picture and all of them were equally good and convincing.
Technical Analysis
Cinematography by Manoj Pillai made a difference in the tone and frames while Bijipal's music was a different one blended with Rafeeq Ahmed's poetic lines. Editing by Sandeep Nandakumar was fine. Also a word of good for the art direction who has done a superb job with his craft. It is produced by the director Ranjith himself under the banner of Gold Coin Motion Pictures.
Verdict

Njan with a different treatment and making style is not an entertaining experience but it gives a classy experience. Its a kind of feel good movie. Whether it will make a big impact at the box office or not, its such a good effort from Renjith. And again he proved himself that Cinema is an art of Director....
