Mohanlal made his acting debut in Thiranottam (1978), but the film got released only after 25 years due to censorship issues. Looks like this trait is common to all great actors. Just like Rajinikanth, Mohanlal made a debut in films as a villain. Lalettan started out in films in 1980 Manjil Virinja Pookkal, where he plays an evil and sadistic husband. His performance in his maiden film was so good that the film obtained cult status.
He became a superstar with the commercial success of Rajavinte Makan (1986) which is widely considered as a cult classic in action movie genre. In a career spanning over three decades, Mohanlal has acted in over 300 Malayalam films in various genres. Mohanlal has also acted in Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. Of these, his notable roles were in Iruvar (1997), directed by Mani Ratnam, and Company (2002), directed by Ram Gopal Varma.
Mohanlal was elected as the most popular Keralite in an online poll conducted by CNN-IBN in 2006 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Kerala's formation.
In 2009, he became the first and the only actor to receive the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army of India and in 2010 he received an honorary doctorate from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala.
Wrestling champion
Mohanlal is one of those few people who came into showbiz on their own without any family affiliations. But before movies became his obsession, the actor was very good in wrestling. He was so good that he was actually a wrestling champion in the entire state of Kerala for two consecutive years.
National awards and Padma Shri
Two of the biggest honours that any actor can receive are the Padma Shri and National award. While even the likes of Rajinikanth received the Padma Vibhushan only recently, Lalettan got his accolades long ago in 2001. Not just that, the Pulimurugan actor has won the National Award for Best Actor twice, once in 1991 and 1999.
Failed Houdini act
Yes, as if singing, acting and producing was enough, the veteran actor even tried to pull off a daredevil stunt. In 2008, Mohanlal tried to do one of the most dangerous escaping acts in the magic, called the Burning Illusion. In this stunt, the actor was to be handcuffed and chained and locked in a box set on fire from which he had to escape. But he was dissuaded at the final moment by his fans and fellow actors.
Maximum number of Hindi remakes
Mohanlal is the only Mollywood actor whose films have been remade very frequently in Hindi. Best examples are Drishyam which was made as Drishyam starring Ajay Devgn, Boing Boing was remade as Garam Masala, Kriddam was remade as Gardish among many more.
